Canada's utilities sectors are managing two aging systems at the same time: critical infrastructure and the workforce that has kept it operating for decades.

Water, wastewater, electricity, telecommunications and other critical services must remain reliable, even as infrastructure ages, regulations evolve and skilled labour becomes harder to find. The scale of the challenge is significant

Statistics Canada estimates that public infrastructure owners require $294.4 billion to rehabilitate or replace core public infrastructure and restore assets to good condition.  

Canada’s electricity system alone is entering a once-in-a-generation expansion and modernization cycle, requiring hundreds of billions of dollars in investment over the next decade.  

The CRTC has also identified Canada's aging copper telecommunications infrastructure as becoming increasingly unreliable.
